In my late 20’s, the two hour drive to Santa Barbara became a welcomed moment of peace in the chaos of raising three kids. Between practices, games and all of their extra curriculars, in those quick weekends away is where my love for wine began. As my children grew, so did my love for this incredibly special and intricate adult grape juice. It became more than just a nice glass on a night out. Or in.
However it wasn’t until Somm made its pictorial debut that left me inspired and wanting to know more. Fascinated, I joined Brian McClintic’s wine club, Viticole. There is where I began to appreciate just how eclectic and diverse wine could actually be. Going beyond the typical housewife heroin (a white wine that will remain nameless), I started to expand my palette. Trying new and unheard of varietals, I was hooked, I wanted to know more.
Starting with the Wine Scholars Guild’s, French Wine Scholar program, I not only learned about the intricacies of French wine, but I also fell madly and deeply in love. To this day, French wine with its complexities, array of varietals, is still my favorite wine. Shortly after, and with a lot of studying, I obtained my WSET Level I, II and III certificates. However, in 2018, upon completion of the FWS course, my instructor offered me a chance to work a harvest in a quaint village in the Côtes du Rhône, in the south of France. A small boutique vineyard, Domaine Rouge-Bleu, owned by a young couple, Thomas and Caroline. Here is where I did the hardest work I have ever done. And I am the mom to three boys. The days were long and hot, and the nights were filled with cooking, lively conversations with others from all over the world and lots of the most delicious wine I have ever had. It felt like a scene out a movie. I had learned so much about viticulture from Thomas and Caroline, and gained so much knowledge and appreciation for the wine making process that I didn’t know how, and I didn’t know when, but I knew I wanted to do a collaboration with them and bring their wine to the states.
A year and half later, sitting in my home like the rest of the world during the pandemic, and much like the rest of the world, I wondered what I was doing with my life. It hit me. Do what you love. And that time in France, on that vineyard, those are some of my most beloved memories. I called Thomas and Caroline, who have now become some of my closest friends and started that collaboration. The collaboration that was only a dream on those warm harvest nights a year and half ago. With that I hope you enjoy Sunday Morning, The Sin Virus and Bitch, let’s be honest (my clap back to housewife heroin) as much as we have enjoyed bringing it to you.
A votre santé
